"When I hear people say "the Jews were passive," and that they didn't fight"-this is nonsense. In many concentration camps there were uprisings, escapes, and in the forests they fought with partisan groups. But they had no identity. The Jews were helpless. If a Jew escaped from the ghetto, where would he go? Abandoned absolutely by all societies, governments, church hierarchies, societal organizations. Only individuals might help and were helping. The help had to come from the powerful Allied leaders, and this help did not come."
